Wednesday is Brain Gym day

The first component of he FOTEO program is the brain, with the mind (thoughts and emotions) the central area of focus. In turn, the nucleus of the mind development is the function of learning and memory. Another term for the brain-mind-learning axis is the Brain Gym which succintly captures the essence of deliberate and active exercises to enhance strength and flexibility of certain brain functions.

In brief, but will be explained in greater detail as the FOTEO blog unfolds, is the suggestion of incorporating daily brain fitness exercises such as reading, writing, chess, Sudoku, crossword puzzles, playing a musical instrument, learning a newmusical instrument, deep conversations, bridge, painting, computer games, and so on. The choice, length, degree of dificulty and number of brain fitness exercises is the responsibility of each participant. (I like to hear what participants choose as there are many types and some I am not even aware of).

The important driver about these examples of brain fitness lessons is the need for each to cause some form of 'stretch' to the brain. Just like walking at a quick pace that increases the conscious awareness of breathing and perhaps slight muscle pain or discomfort, so to the brain-mind exercises need to release a conscious awareness of some mental strain. Doing exercises that are easy is like taking gentle stroll around the garden. Better than nothing but minimal effect.

So choose brain exercises that you enjoy, fit in to the rhythms of your day, and actively engage with them. Feel the strain!

The birth of FOTEO in cyberspace

Today is the beginning of a new chapter in my professional life.

FOTEO, an acronym for From Ordinary to Extra-Ordinary, catches up with the cyberspace vehicle known as blogging. The essential aim is to board this super express knowledge train that can rapidly travel to all corners of the world and provides a means of communicating my ideas that explain and enhance the principles and practices that underpin the FOTEO program.

So in some small way, a community is formed connected together by members of FOTEO.

There will hopefully be a daily bulletin that will cover the four main components of FOTEO:

1. The Brain ( the mind and learning being central informants).

2. The Heart(exercise/movement dominates).

3. The Gut. (nutrition and any other chemical, but also general health).

4. The Limbs (all about relationships: self, family, work, environment, spiritual.... ).

But the one page FOTEO daily sheet is core to the program. All members will be sent a copy for their use, which can be printed and copied and filed in any means that is decided.

What is very useful about using a blog page is that it can accessed easily by the internet address and does not require email delivery. Just go directly to the site and read what is new (or old) and comment if necessary. Members can send a personal comment or query via email as well.

The cost of membership to the FOTEO program is R180.00 per month for a minimum of three months, which equals to approximately R5.00 a day.

The introductory FOTEO program extends over a 12 week period or 84 days - almost three months.

Disclaimer: Please note that the FOTEO program is advisory only in the sense of providing information that is motivating and based on good science. However, it does not mean that it is comprehensive in any way and that it replaces any form of treatment provided by other professionals. Good sense should prevail when making decisions to participate in any aspects of the program. For example, if an exercise program is suggested and you have not participated in any form of exercise for a long time, a medical check up is suggested.
